Аннотация: This Book examines the impact of history in Ireland, north and south. It considers the importance of the past and looks at how we receive and understand it. It looks at how history is used and abused. A central argument of the book is that history is no more or less important in Ireland than elsewhere. However, people believe that it is more relevant in Ireland than elsewhere and therefore history, or more often, the myths of history, can affect strongly contemporary events.'History's tune' often influences actions. A wide range of essays includes a study of changes in the way the past is commemorated in annual events such as St Patrick's Day and the 12th of July, an examination of the unionist sense of history, an account of how ideas of Irish identity have changed over the last two hundred years and an analysis of contemporary uses of the past. Several essays emphasise that historical developments in Ireland are not unique, and they consider both European dimensions and north/south comparisons.
